Hardwood Decking and Custom Pergolas for Outdoor-Living Upgrades

Decks and pergolas extend the house into the garden. We design the connection — flashing, levels, threshold, screening — as carefully as the structure itself.

What the work actually covers

Where the house ends and the garden begins

Have you ever stared out your back window and wished that sloping, unusable dirt could actually become your favourite place to relax? A well-planned setup of decking & pergolas is the best outdoor living upgrade for homes across Melbourne’s north-eastern and inner-eastern suburbs.

We design decks to feel like a natural extension of your house architecture. The goal is to make the step outside totally effortless.

Our team focuses on the hidden details that make a huge difference, including:

  • Proper flashing: Deflects water away from your walls to prevent damage.
  • Flush thresholds: Connects your indoor floor directly to the garden.
  • Sub-floor ventilation: Lets the timber breathe and prevents fast decay.

A poorly built outdoor structure can rot within five years and cause expensive water leaks. These exact features ensure the structure quietly outlasts a lot of the rest of your garden.

We are going to walk you through the materials and steps needed for a perfect build. Grab a cup of coffee, and let’s go through the details together. The experts at David Claude Landscape Design are ready to help.

Timber selection

Choosing the right material changes everything about how your new space looks and performs. The exact species you pick will dictate the maintenance schedule and the final colour.

Our initial advice is to always look for Class 1 or Class 2 durability ratings. These top-tier woods naturally resist decay and pests in the challenging Melbourne climate.

It pays to invest in quality from the very beginning. We highly recommend comparing your top choices side-by-side before making a final decision.

Australian hardwoods

Spotted gum and blackbutt are the two local species we specify most often. These premium Victorian-available hardwoods provide excellent density, colour consistency, and weather resistance.

Our clients love that both woods meet BAL 29 bushfire requirements, which is essential for properties in Eltham or Warrandyte. Blackbutt reads blonder and creates a bright, modern look.

Spotted gum reads mid-toned with beautiful wavy grain character and a tough Janka hardness rating of around 11.0 kN. We expect a properly maintained hardwood deck to last 40 to 50 years. Both species oil beautifully and stand up to heavy family traffic.

Merbau

Merbau served as the default decking species in Melbourne for decades. This imported timber is hard, stable, and traditionally quite affordable.

Our builders know it has a rich red colour that gives a classic, timeless finish to any backyard. You must be prepared for it to bleed tannins when first installed.

Merbau naturally bleeds tannins when wet. A high-quality UV-protective oil applied immediately will maintain its stunning colour and prevent surface cracking.

We still use merbau where clients specifically request it and where the supply chain is completely FSC-verified. Sourcing certified wood guarantees it comes from responsibly managed forests. A clear conscience makes your outdoor space even more relaxing.

Treated pine

Treated pine serves as the most economical option for budget-conscious projects. The wood is normally H3-treated, which specifically protects it against rot and termites for above-ground exterior use.

Our team often uses pine for large-scale areas where the visual aesthetic is slightly less critical. It offers a solid 15 to 25-year service life.

Annual maintenance is absolutely required to prevent the wood from silvering or degrading rapidly. We warn homeowners that skipping this upkeep leads to early replacement costs. Applying a good stain can easily help this softwood mimic the look of more expensive hardwoods.

Structure and detail

The hidden foundation is actually the most critical part of your entire build. Framing always follows strict AS 1684 guidelines to ensure joists, bearers, and posts are correctly sized for span and load.

Our designs prioritise sub-floor ventilation above almost everything else. A lack of airflow causes timber to rot from below while looking perfectly fine on top.

We follow the Building Code of Australia requirement to maintain a minimum ground clearance of 400mm. For sloping sites, that clearance can safely drop to 150mm near the wall. Proper grading ensures water flows away from the footings.

  • AS 1684 Compliance: Ensures all load-bearing timber is correctly sized and safe.
  • Proper Ground Clearance: A minimum 400mm gap stops moisture pooling underneath.
  • Mandatory Ventilation: Pryda 230x165 vents deliver 6000 square millimetres of airflow per metre.
  • Concealed Fasteners: Kreg and Tiger Claw clips prevent surface water damage and look cleaner.

Our installations incorporate these exact ventilation standards to prevent moisture from trapping and destroying the timber. Concealed fixings give a much cleaner board face than standard exposed screws. They also completely avoid the top-down moisture entry paths that screw heads eventually create.

Pergolas, attached and freestanding

A pergola acts as a structural overhead canopy to define an outdoor room without completely enclosing it. These features use posts, beams, and rafters to cast beautiful shade over your seating areas.

We build attached pergolas directly against the house, usually flashed into the existing wall with a sturdy ledger. Freestanding structures sit on their own concrete footings further out in the garden. Adding a high-quality Colorbond steel roof can provide total rain protection for year-round entertaining.

Our designs frequently incorporate screening to adapt the structure to your specific site. Blocking the harsh western afternoon sun and preventing neighbour overlooking are the two most common reasons for screening. You can customise your screening with several popular options:

  • Slatted timber battens for a natural look.
  • Adjustable aluminium louvres for complete climate control.
  • Custom climbing plant trellises for a lush garden feel.

We love integrating smart LED lighting directly into the pergola framework. This simple addition extends your deck’s usefulness well into the evening. The right lighting transforms the space into a true outdoor room.

Permits and compliance

Understanding council regulations is a vital step before any construction begins. Small garden-scale pergolas often skip the permit process if they sit under local council size thresholds.

Our experience shows that in Victoria, any structure larger than 10 square metres or attached directly to your home will generally require a formal building permit. Properties located inside a Bushfire Management Overlay face even stricter material requirements. Building without approval is never worth the risk.

We handle all the necessary documentation to ensure your project stays completely legal and stress-free.

Skipping the permit process can lead to hefty council fines or forced demolition of your new entertaining space. Always verify local rules first.

Building a beautiful outdoor space is the best way to maximise your property value. A high-quality installation of decking & pergolas simply makes living in your home more enjoyable.

FAQ

Common questions about Decking

Which timber should I use for decking in Melbourne? add
Spotted gum and blackbutt are our most-specified Australian hardwoods — dense, durable and colour-stable. Merbau has been traditional but environmental questions have moved many projects to local species. Treated pine is the economical option with a shorter service life.
How long does a deck last? add
Hardwood decks with proper sub-floor ventilation and annual oiling last 25–40 years. Treated pine decks typically last 15–25 years. Neglected decks of either species fail much earlier — maintenance matters.
Do I need a permit for a pergola? add
Small garden-scale pergolas under council-set thresholds often don't; larger or attached structures do. We check your site's planning overlays and handle permitting where required.
Should the deck attach to the house or be freestanding? add
Attached is the default — lower cost, tighter threshold detail. Freestanding is specified when the architecture or the site rules it out, or when the deck sits further into the garden.
